Afterword by Robert Adams:
What do these pictures say? Like all poetry, they cannot be
translated, but it is possible to identify a subject that unifies
this book - children's innocence of the wider world, and their
parents' meditative, tender caring.
The young are fearless partly because they are unknowing.
They are absorbed wholly in the feel of their own bodies,
in the intensity of their own emotions, and in the immediacy
of their own discoveries - the wonder of what is grass, for
instance, or how to get through a fence. They are as confidently
inside themselves as the girl who rests with her sweater pulled
over her head.
I want to call out „wait" to the boy who, while awkwardly
putting on a jacket, walks alone into an empty landscape.
What do we know that the children do not? On the evidence
of the pictures, they do not fully realize the indifference of
Nature to human concerns - the vastness of the sea and the cold
of winter. And they haven't sounded the enigma of human nature,
the force that gave us, together with much that is good, the snarl
of wire there against the leaves and sky.
What do the photographs mean? Turn the pages slowly.
The pictures were made with affection and gratitude.
