À partir du lundi 1er juillet, nous exposons en collaboration avec la galerie ISO, PROMOTION 1964: Travaux d'étudiantes Japonaises de l'école de photographie de Tokyo. En parallèle, nous présenterons une sélection d’ouvrages réalisés par des femmes photographes japonaises.
Les travaux photographiques d'étudiantes japonaises de 1964 réunit 209 tirages argentiques réalisés par trois photographes dans le cadre de cours dispensés au sein de l’école de photographie de Tokyo. Cette école créée en 1958 par l’influent critique de photographie Koen SHIGEMORI forme une nouvelle génération de photographes parmi lesquels Issei SUDA, Hiromi TSUCHIDA ou encore Kishin SHINOYAMA. À l’instar du monde professionnel de la photographie japonais, elle accueille principalement des étudiants masculins. Le projet des trois photographes femmes se distingue donc.
La richesse de ce corpus est à la fois de mettre en exergue l’apprentissage et le travail des femmes photographes japonaises amateurs, mais aussi de souligner la diversité de leurs approches. Pour un même exercice, un même sujet, chacune des trois photographes trouvent une réponse personnelle et inspirée. Cet ensemble relève surtout la volonté de trois femmes d’apprendre et de pratiquer la photographie, une démarche précurseur. En effet, il faut attendre près de 10 ans, en 1976, pour que la photographe Miyako ISHIUCHI organise une exposition collective de 10 femmes photographes à la galerie Shimizu. Une exposition qui voulait souligner l’absence d’une représentation des femmes photographes dans le monde de la photographie japonaise.
Nous vous convions au vernissage de l’exposition le mardi 2 juillet à partir de 19 h. L’exposition se tiendra à la galerie ISO du 1er au 31 juillet.
From Monday 1 July, we will be exhibiting in collaboration with the ISO gallery, YEAR 1964: Works by Japanese students at the Tokyo School of Photography. At the same time, we will be presenting a selection of works by Japanese women photographers.
The works by Japanese students of year 1964 brings together 209 silver prints made by three photographers as part of courses given at the Tokyo School of Photography. This school, founded in 1958 by the influential photography critic Koen SHIGEMORI, trained a new generation of photographers including, Issei SUDA, Hiromi TSUCHIDA and Kishin SHINOYAMA. Like the professional world of Japanese photography, the school’s students were mainly men. The works of the three women photographers therefore stand out. We have kept the names of two of these students, Tamiko MATSUBARA and Kimie KANAZAWA. Together with their classmate, they have devoted a year to learning photography, producing works of great formal and artistic quality.
The richness of this body of work is both to highlight the learning process and work of amateur Japanese women photographers, and to underline the diversity of their approaches. For the same exercise, the same subject, each of the three photographers finds a personal and inspired response. Above all, this collection highlights the desire of three women to learn and practise photography, a pioneering approach. Indeed, it was not until almost 10 years later, in 1976, that the photographer Miyako ISHIUCHI organised a group exhibition of 10 women photographers at the Shimizu gallery. The exhibition was intended to highlight the lack of representation of women photographers in Japan.
