Twentysix Gasoline Stations de Ed Ruscha est souvent considéré comme le premier livre d'artiste. Ed Ruscha évoque le livre ainsi : « Lorsque j'ai commencé à travailler sur les livres, j'ai senti qu'il s'agissait de la partie la plus importante de mon travail. C'était l'élément de choix. Même si je peignais des tableaux à cette époque, j'ai senti que les livres étaient plus avancés en tant que concept que les peintures individuelles que j'avais faites » (Enright, 2008). Cette conception du livre en tant qu’œuvre en elle-même, et non simple support, c’est ce qui définit le livre d’artiste.
Le livre d’artiste est une autre manière de concevoir le livre de photographie et sa diffusion. Aux multiples et aux rééditions, il se pense en œuvres limitées qui nécessitent, généralement, des travaux de recherche et de confections longs. Il procure à la fois une plus grande liberté aux artistes quant à l’exploration du médium photographique, mais aussi au regard d’une réflexion sur l’objet livre qui est pensé comme une œuvre à part entière. Notre exposition illustre les questionnements communs aux photographes contemporains et les pistes très personnelles que ces derniers explorent dans leurs confections.
L’exposition réunira les travaux de beaucoup d'artistes.

We are delighted to announce our new exhibition of contemporary artist's books from 8 to 31 October.
Twentysix Gasoline Stations by Ed Ruscha is often considered to be the first artist's book. Ed Ruscha describes the book as follows: ‘I felt when I got going on the books that it was really the red meat of my work. It was the choice bit. Although I was painting pictures at that time, I felt that the books were more advanced as a concept than the individual paintings I had been doing’ (Enright, 2008). This conception of the book as a work in itself, and not just a medium, is what defines the artist's book.
The artist's book is another way of conceiving the photography book and its distribution. Instead of multiple editions and reprints, it is conceived as limited works that generally require lengthy research and production. It gives artists greater freedom to explore the photographic medium, but also allows them to reflect on the book as a work in its own right. Our exhibition illustrates the questions shared by contemporary photographers and the highly personal avenues they explore in their work.
