"A mysterious, somber and surreal collection of photographs depicting the desert landscape at night. Richard Misrach captured these images with an intense flash of light that startles the scenery. "Thus it is a book about the camera revealing what the eye cannot see...a strange beauty, almost of a forensic nature, with cacti and details of the desert floor being highlighted unnaturally by the strobe. Misrach highlighted this artificiality by heavily toning his prints with split-tone selenium, a tonality picked up well in the printing of the book. It adds a feeling of menace to the undoubted beauty..."
