Chauncey Hare captures the terrifying, claustrophobic ordinariness of the real America that lives out its bewildered days behind the slap-happy myth of progress, the facade of affluence. It is the America where cracks in the plaster, dishes in the sink, stains on the linoleum are the hieroglyphics of despair. His photographs are trial wasteland of modern life like a gathering death wish. After reading the personal statement Hare has attached to this book, I can see that these are not simply photographs of America's interior, but of his own inner being. He has lived he estrangement and desperation of these images.
