Fontcuberta is a conceptual artist whose best-known works, such as Fauna and Sputnik, examine the veracity of photography. Fauna, also known as “Fauna of Dr. Ameisenhaufen” or “Secret Fauna ,” was a collaboration between Fontcuberta and photographer Pere Formiguera following the discovery of the long-lost archives of German zoologist Dr. Peter Ameisenhaufen, who was born in 1895 and disappeared mysteriously in 1955. Ameisenhaufen had catalogued a series of unusual animals, such as the monkey-like Ceropithecus icarocornu, with a horn like that of the unicorn and wings; or Solenoglypha polipodida, similar to a three-and-a-half-metre snake. The exhibition review presented in 1988 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York noted that among the evidence for the existence of these animals were "photographs of them, both in their natural habitats and in the laboratory; detailed field studies, both in the original German and in translations into English, French and Spanish; some X-rays or skeletal dissections; recordings of the animals' squeaks; and stuffed specimens".
