A stapled booklet, a stereoscopic map, three risographs and a red plastic viewer: these are the clues left behind by the Stenobus's visit to France Miniature.
This project documents the transformation of a remote-controlled bus into a micro camera obscura equipped with a pinhole camera. Like a miniature Google Car, this photographic toy navigates the park's paths, capturing replicas of monuments.
In L'Image fantôme, Hervé Guibert compares the bus to a large photographic machine: its windows are like frames through which the gaze settles to extract images from the moving world. The Stenobus literally re-enacts this metaphor, in a DIY, small-scale version.
Whether clear or blurred, each snapshot produced is rendered in stereoscopic vignettes where barriers, topiaries and chromatic aberrations become signs of a staged reality in which the image ultimately betrays its own mechanics.
Through still and moving images, Charlotte Vignes explores the potential of the photographic medium by questioning the systems of representation linked to its technical developments. Insidious details inject her images with a potential for reappropriation or displacement and attempt to undermine the certainties that photography can convey. Whether dealing with archives, technical objects or visual fictions, she questions the construction of the gaze.
